Hi, I'm Red! Some of you might know I'm currently attending a school called
3dsense Media School. In this entry I'm going to talk about my first term in this school as a student of Concept Design & Illustration.
I found out about the school online, through the famous
Artgerm who is one of the instructors there. A few years ago, I discovered he and some of his colleagues from
Imaginary Friends Studios would be teaching there. I applied to 3dsense in November 2015 with the hopes of getting accepted for the March 2016 intake. One of the requirements was a portfolio of 5 artworks (4 digital, 1 traditional portrait).
Here are 4 of the artworks I submitted:
Some info about the course: 1. It's a full-time 1 year course!
2. They don't accept/reject people based on the quality of their art. Even total beginners can be accepted!
3. International students can apply, but of course you have to move to Singapore for 1 year.
I was nervous about many things, such as whether I'd submitted the requirements correctly, whether I did well in the interview or not, about moving to a completely different country and living alone, and whether or not I'd get in! I was ecstatic when I received the email telling me I had officially been accepted. xD
Term 1 I think a student of 3dsense has to learn to manage their time well. There are new lessons every day and there is new homework all the time. The exercises come out one after another in rapid fire. You often have a week or two to complete them, but there is always new homework for other classes. We had subjects for Anatomy, Perspective, 3D software like Maya and Zbrush, Intro to Photoshop, and Advanced Fundamentals. Because it's only a 1 year course, the lecturers have to go through the lessons rather quickly.
The biggest struggle I had was with adjusting to using Adobe Photoshop to paint (I previously used Paint Tool SAI), as well as a new method of painting. It is a method which helps you understand how light and shadow work better by painting ambient occlusion, followed by one light at a time. It's quite similar to the one used here by
tsuaii:
The lecturers were very patient, encouraging, and always willing to explain topics we didn't understand, but I was very depressed within the first few months of the course. I was frustrated with using Photoshop and I disliked the look of the artwork I was producing with the new method. I slacked off a lot because I was so discouraged and this often led to work of even poorer quality. I blamed Photoshop, the painting process, and of course I always blamed myself haha.
I'm quite lucky in that I had a lot of people supporting me. :] My boyfriend
TheObliviousOwl was with me while I worked on every piece, and I had classmates who listened to me and gave me advice. I found a few artists to talk to here on dA, and I confided in members of my family too. It helped a lot as well that the lecturers at school were so understanding and supportive.
Towards the end of the term, I focused most of my energies on becoming comfortable with the new software and method, as well as trying to think positively. By the end of it, I'd come up with
one artwork I'm pretty proud of. As a Term 2 student, I'm hopeful there will be more. If nothing else, I feel I've improved somewhat in the span of 4-ish months. :] Here is the first illustration I made as a student, and the most recent one:
If you're interested in checking out 3dsense, they have a facebook page they update pretty regularly and you can find course information here:
